| One of four developers will find out today (Thursday 15th) if they have the go-ahead to build high-rise flats and multistorey car park in the middle of Newbury.
West Berkshire Council is meeting behind closed doors to select a builder from the shortlist. The winner will have to apply for planning permission jointly with West Berkshire Council, but the council has agreed to force Countryside Books and Conservative Association to sell up if necessary.
As revealed on newbury.net last week, the Tory-run council is prepared to allow five-storey tower blocks, and workmen are expected to start demolishing the bus station and terrace of six houses in August 2007 – the same time as contractors will be building over the Cheap Street car park to install a cinema and restaurants. |
