Newbury Town Design Statement
08th September 2005 16.11pm

“The challenge is to analyse the character of the town, identifying its best assets, and systematically begin to plan so as to conserve and enhance a beautiful and historic English market town for future generations to enjoy”

Newbury’s long awaited Town Design Statement will be launched as a printed document on September 12th 2005 at a Reception for invited guests in the Town Hall Council Chamber.

The document analyses the character of Newbury and sets out how the local community wanted to have a positive influence on any future changes in the town, by conserving the ‘best of the old’, and encouraging sympathetic new development. Reference will be made to it by developers or residents considering new development. It will also be useful to local residents who may want to object to any specific planning application.

The document is in the form of a 64 page illustrated booklet, which describes each of the 11 Character Areas of Newbury Town in detail and then recommends specific design guidelines. The Conclusion picks out 11 ‘Key Principles’ relating to the whole town. The Newbury Town Design Statement has been accepted by West Berkshire as ‘material consideration’ in the determination of future planning applications.

The document is free to residents of Newbury and can be picked up from the Town Hall Reception during office hours from 13th September 2005. Non residents can buy the document for £5.
