Carnival to clash with Live8
25th June 2005 9.57am

Newbury Carnival organisers are facing up to a day battling against the pull of Live8 next weekend.

With just four floats and lacklustre attendance at the 2004 carnival, organizers regrouped, and switched the parade to the Saturday to create more of a buzz.

But Bob Geldof’s mammoth concert in Hyde Park is expected to draw massive TV audiences, leaving the carnival organisers fearful of another low attendance.

This year, the carnival has a talent search for the best young rock band at the Bandstand in Victoria Park, as well as the usual fair and attractions. This gives local bands the chance to take the stage at the same time as their rock giant counterparts in London – such as Pink Floyd, REM and Madonna.
