Town hall race debate
03rd August 2004 11.23am

Police, firemen and politicians will gather in Newbury tonight to hear whether business people from minority backgrounds suffer racism in the town.

Although only 1% of West Berkshire’s population is non-white - largely in Calcot and Tilehurst - district council chairman James Mole has drafted in help from Reading to get to grips with the issues.

The Council for Racial Equality’s Reading branch chairman Rajinder Sohpal, who will chair the meeting, said: "It is great that Councillor Mole has taken this initiative, and I hope that it will help to forge strong links with the ethnic minority business community."

Mr Mole added, "We are very keen to understand the issues and concerns of the ethnic minority business community and to offer general business advice and support.

The event runs in the town hall from 6-8pm, email rcraggs@westberks.gov.uk if you wish to attend.
