Town moves up rich list
26th July 2004 16.20pm

Forget leafy Windsor or the dreaming spires of Oxford, Newbury's wealthier than both, according to a new survey.

West Berkshire has the fifth highest household income in the UK, as details emerged that typical homes in the Newbury area take home around £40,000 a year.

There’s been little change at the top in recent years - Wokingham, Guildford, and Chelsea always do well - but local prosperity put the Newbury area ahead of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Typical Newbury workers now earn almost twice as much as colleagues in Hull or Stoke, and the gulf could be wider, as market research firm CACI does not count anyone earning over £75,000, in case they skews the figures.

The UK average household income is just under £30,000, although 14% of UK households get by on less than £10,000 a year.

However, the report says it's not simply a north south divide, pointing to affluence in Leeds, and poverty in Portsmouth.

Even in the Newbury parliamentary area, 11% of children are living in poverty, rising to 14% in Reading West.
