Sex attacks and break-ins are on the up in the Newbury area, according to new crime figures out this week.
Although reported crime in West Berkshire is down 8%, the startling rise in sexual offences continues, rising 16%. This follows a rise of almost 50% last year.
Burglaries have also soared by 31% in the year to March, according to the Home Office data, but muggings, car crime, and violent attacks all fell.
West Berkshire is still the safest of the Thames Valley force’s 10 divisions, but police said the burglary statistic - there are 12 break-ins a week in the district - was "unacceptable", while it was working hard to curb sex attacks.
District police chief, Supt Jim Trotman, said: "We are pleased with the reduction in crime, but, we will not be complacent and will continue to work hard to drive down crime in the area."
Police were most impressed by a 63% fall in West Berkshire robberies, from 73 to just 27. Meanwhile, violent crime rose 13% across the Thames Valley, but fell 2% in West Berkshire.
