Many letter writers who use the special "local mail" box at Newbury's main Post Office are under the mistaken impression that this mail is sorted locally and gets a speedier delivery than mail posted in the adjacent first and second class boxes.
Apparently ALL mail is now sorted in Reading and although Newbury does have the facility to sort its own mail, the recent "improvements" to the service have meant that everything is taken to Reading where it receives the normal service dependent on the price of the stamp.
A spokesman for the Royal Mail said that the mail from the "local" box is combined with the other mail and receives no preferential treatment.
