Photo finish for Snappy Snaps
09th July 2004 11.29am

Newbury officials have chalked up a rare victory in the battle to maintain its character.

Snappy Snaps in Bartholomew Street caused a rumpus by painting the shop next to St Nicolas' Church canary yellow.

But West Berkshire Council ordered the unit to get a fresh coat of green paint, to keep in line with tough town centre planning rules.

Shop manager Mark Arrowsmith moved in to the former Endsleigh Insurance branch as the new road layout was completed, and trading has been brisk. All other Snappy Snaps units have a yellow frontage.

The crackdown on Snappy Snaps comes after widespread concern from town conservation groups over Starbucks disregard for the planning system, while the Kennet Centre's £2 million illuminated entrances have also come under fire from traditionalists.
