A load of bull on Greenham Common
05th July 2004 10.13am

Farmer Ken Neal is hoping to develop a rare herd of British white cattle on Greenham Common, and has introduced a bull to start the process.

The beasts are believed to be linked to the mystical aurochs, which used to roam the primeval forest of ancient Britain. The breed is noted for doing well on heathland.

Rural officials say the bulls are not aggressive to humans, but can be spooked by uncontrolled dogs.

Mr Ken Neal said: "This project has been supported by other graziers on the common and we look forward to breeding the herd up to full pedigree status".

Several cows have been killed by speeding drivers on Burys Bank Road, so West Berkshire Council hopes an all-white breed will be more visible.
