Police issue warning after bag snatches 25th June 2004 14.51pm
Police are appealing for information and warning women to be cautious after two attempted bag-snatches in Victoria Park, Newbury.
A 20-year-old woman was walking through the park at 3am on Sunday (20/6) when a man jumped out from a building in the park and grabbed at her bag. She kicked out and the man ran off empty handed. The offender is described as being white, around 5ft 9ins and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top, black jeans and white trainers.
A 16-year-old girl was cycling through the park between 11.05pm and 11.25pm on Monday (21/6) when a man tried to pull her from the bike. She kicked him and again he ran away with nothing. He is white, around 5ft 10ins and was wearing dark clothing.
PC Gary Hemmings, of Newbury police, said: "We would like to hear from anyone who has seen someone matching this description hanging around the park or who has any idea who the man could be.
"It certainly sounds as though this is the same person targeting young women who are on their own, so I would advise people in Newbury not to take short cuts through the park late at night and to take personal safety seriously."
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Hemmings or PC Danks via the Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505. Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
