Library future in the balance 14th June 2004 15.30pm
Newbury Town Council are considering a subsidy to assist with the reopening of the container library facility at Wash Common. The container library was closed by West Berkshire Council earlier this year. Since then there has been a campaign by Wash Common residents to have it reinstated. They have succeeded in raising a £10,000.00 donation from Total Oil, but this was not enough to make West Berks change their mind.
Newbury Town Council will be discussing the matter this evening (14th June) at the Arts and Leisure committee meeting at the Town Hall starting at 7.30pm It might be too late, when our photographer visited the site, there is now just an empty space where the container used to be. Rumour has it that West Berkshire Council are using it as an archive store for old drawings and documents.
