Newbury
Leukaemia Study
Group

The Group and its Objectives

Objectives

1 - To gather and collate information, and stimulate research into, clusters of leukaemia;

2 - To provide a point of contact within the community for people concerned and affected; and

3 - To ensure information is accessible and disseminated locally and more widely.

Structure and methods of operation

The NLSGs first meeting was 20 October 1997. All members of the group attend in their capacity of local residents, although they may bring to the group their professional skills to aid discussion and research. As well as a vast pool of local knowledge, the group has a wide range of professional skills from areas such as the nuclear industry, biology, biochemistry, law, education, local government and IT.

The group is non-political and independent of industry or authority funding, but has received support and encouragement from the Newbury District Council (NDC) and the Newbury Town Council. Both these bodies have agreed, in principle, to use their position to assist NLSG in obtaining information which may not be readily accessible to the public.

A large number of topics have been suggested for research, and that list is constantly revised. The group decided that research should be done topic by topic, ensuring all aspects of one subject was covered before moving on to the next. The original list of topics for further investigation included:

A report on each topic will be published once an adequate quantity of information becomes available. No guarantees will be made as to when or if the information will be made available, however, if you have any information to add to the research please e-mail the address below.
