Dear all,

My name is Pieter Schlebaum and I am a history teacher from The Netherlands. Over five years now, I am researching Wellington losses of 142 Squadron, Royal Air Force, in the Netherlands. As part of my research I am looking for information on Sergeant Edward Sextus Swingler. He was the son of William Herbert and Lilian Alice Swingler, of Newbury, Berkshire. He was 25 years old when he was killed on 20 January 1942. He is buried in the cemetery of the Dutch island Terschelling.

Does anybody on this forum know if there are still descendants of Edward Swingler living in Newbury? Or do you know if there are any people or societies who might be able to provide me more information about this man?

I am very much looking forward to your replies.

Yours Sincereley,

Pieter Schlebaum
The Netherlands

Do you remember when Newbury had it's own TV Studio?

Opened in a blaze of publicity in 1993 when Meridian was awarded the franchise previously held by TVS. The studio was closed in 2001 as part of a cost cutting exercise. News coverage on Meridian for Newbury and West Berkshire has deteriorated slowly ever since.

The only time we get a mention these days is when Kate Middleton returns to Bucklebury, or there is a major story for the area. Even Southampton seems to get poor coverage, with most news stories concentrated in the South East, rather than South Central.

[face=Arial][/face]

Does anyone have some memories about St Nick's? I was there during Mr. Pike's time, finishing up in Miss Drury's class in 1952. I remember the great heaps of coke outside, the Victorian bogs in the playground, Mr Pike haranguing us about 'breathing through the nose' , the dreaded Miss Biddis, etc.

Some photos would be a bonus.
