Not a Newbury news story, but this may be of interest
West Berkshire Council is helping pupils and staff at Kennet School in Thatcham to realise the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling, by offering free breakfasts to everyone who wears one.
Six mornings during this term, riders will be able to claim their free breakfast if they are seen wearing their helmet. It is hoped that the scheme will also encourage others who do not currently cycle, to consider using two wheels to travel to work or school.
Scheme co-ordinator and Deputy Headteacher Mr Jenkins said: “Once again, we are delighted to be the first secondary school in West Berkshire to offer this incentive to those pupils and staff who opt to cycle to school. We know that the fitter our pupils are, the better exam grades they achieve, so our pupils, staff and local community will all gain from this initiative”.
Barbara Alexander, West Berkshire Executive Councillor for Children and Young People said: This scheme is an excellent idea. It shows how good and safe travel habits shown by our young people can result in benefits for all our community.”
Coral Taylor, the Council’s Schools Travel Plan Adviser said: “It’s a pleasure to work in partnership with the pupils and staff at Kennet School. I would like to hear from any other schools who would be interested in trying a similar scheme.”
